Sony DCRTRV17 camcorder

I am about to enter the murky world of home videos with a view to recording, editting and burning onto cd. I've done some research so I know at a high level what is required.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but on the other hand I want to buy something that will do the job well.

I've been looking at the Sony DCRTRV17 and would appreciate any comments from people who have experience of this camcorder.

I would also appreciate any comment on advice on editting software and VCD burning software ( I don't have a DVD writer but I do have a CD writer).
