As in the link posted by jomike analogue capture to a PC is best done via a digital camcorder, as long as it has AV-in. If the cam does not have AV-in then it wont be able to be used for this.
If you don't have a digital camcorder, or one without AV-in then you will need to get some other hardware. The best devices are the Canopus ADVC converters that plug into the PC via firewire (same as a digital cam) and have the analogue connections on them to plug the analogue camcorder into. You can then use any editing program to capture the video. They cost from around £150 up depending on the model/features.
Other than that there is the cheaper USB2.0 capture devices from around £30 up, but these offer lower quality capture and can cause all sorts of problems such as lip sync errors. If quality is important to you then IMO this option is best avoided, but if you just need to capture the odd old home made VHS etc then this may well be good enough.

Mark.

If your PC is pre-PCI express then you could try loooking for the sort of card I have which is an Sapphire (ATI) All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800 SE (an AGP card). It has a breakout box and connectors for analogue devices. It also runs DirectX 9 so you can play current games.

The card I had before this was (and still have) is the 7500 which also has a breakout box but doesn't run DirectX 9.

The 9800 is the one to look for and it comes under various brand names, and the better one doesn't have the SE suffix. It's been superceded now by PCI express and if your PC has these then look on the ATI site for the current AIW Radeons. It also provides facility for recording and pausing TV. You might get a 9800 at a computer fair (great for old and new stuff) or from eBay.
