VOB Converter codec question

Hi
i need to find the best way to convert VOB files direct from dvd to avi so i can edit them.
i have a copy of winavi converter which is supposed to do this but i don't think i have the right codec as i can't view the imported avi in windows media player, the audio is there just a black screen. I haven't tried to import and edit this yet as i believe that if windows media player won't play it then something isn't right.
this is to access material on my home made dvd's not bought ones so there is no issue about removing macrovision etc.

i use ulead movie studio 9 which has the ability to lift straight from a dvd disk however it won't read some of my disks, which is strange because they play ok.

bottom line.
whats the best software to convert VOB's to avi and what settings or codec do i need?

thanks

I have previously used Pinnacle Studio 9 to convert VOB files to AVI and it works OK.

You could also try this free software utility:

The best way IMO is to not convert the files. Just rename the .VOB files to .MPG and these will then be readable by most editing programs. If you convert them to .AVI files then there will be a loss of picture quality, and then again when converting back to MPEG-2 files to write to another DVD.

Mark.

I found IMTOO DVD Ripper some time back and it has worked out well for me. I use it to convert my DVDs to any format I want then I bring them into Pinnacle Studio for editing. ***************.
