just bought a old faulty Canovision A1 hi8 was I a prat?

Hi everyone, Just bought this canovision A1 hi 8 on the spare of the moment at the YMCA shop, they said it was faulty but is was cheap.

When plugged in the power comes on for about 15 seconds with the Batt low sign flahsing in the lcd none of the other buttons will work in this 15 seconds and then it dies untill i turn it on again and the same thing happens. Was hopping it was just the power supply but that is giving a steady 6v.

Can anyone recomend the best and cheapest way to get it looked at by an expert. I would really like if I could get a low cost or even free quote for a repair.
