Digital Camcorder up to 1000.

Hi, I have quite a problem, a friend of mine is planning to buy camera for up to 800 quid max. 1000 (but better not).
What would You suggest, DVD Video Camera, HDD Video Camera, or any others? What brands to look for, and what to avoid?

MiniDV, Mini DV, Mini DV

Panasonics are good (GS-250)

Could use a bit more information about the end use.

Is widescreen important?, Is manual control important?, is there a god?

Really MiniDV, not DVD, HDD or Flash Cards? What is the advantage of miniDV?

I don't think that manual is important, probably for home use, widescreen is not important i suppose.

miniDV is the least compressed cheapest media, universally used, universally available, stable, good quality, compact.... AVI is far better than MPEG2 & 4.

DVD is neither cheap nor flexble for later editing, HDD (JVC Everio) are ( on the face of it) an elegant simple solution but editing out of the camera is not easily possible. Besides how do you archive your footage? .flash cards would require a degree of compression that would render your final quality highly degraded: also not they do not work out cheap ( as they do with still digital photography which is less demanding of space) or easily editable. For cost, availabilty .the least compression and ease of editing you cannot at the present time beat MiniDV

Yes, Mini DV gets my vote aswell and as a biased Panasonic user I would have to agree with the other contributers.

Yes, I considered 3 brands: Panasonic (cause of lens), Sony (cause of lens) and Canon (also lens and overall). Any ideas which one should I erase from the list?

none... Just make sure you hold in your hand before you part with cash. One of the disadvatages of internet shopping. The cameras may be broadly similar in results but feel different regarding ease of use and comfort to sway it one way or another for you. Its a bit like test driving a car and not just relying on pics or looks in the show room .
