Hello everyone. This is my first post and I hope u guys could help.

I am having problems capturing video through my firewire port in my laptop. I am getting blocky video and static noise when I capture it to my pc. The video on the LCD panel of the camcorder is fine. I have uploaded a small clip (580Kb) here to show how the video capture is.

I have a P4 laptop with 256 ram, a Radeon 7500 graphic adaptor and running Win 98SE. My camcorder is Sony DCR HC40E.

I have tried Ulead Videostudio 9 and Pinnacle Studio 9 with the same problems.

Your clip didn'nt open..

however the problem is probably caused by the slow hard drives fitted to most PC's, it'll probably be something like a 4500rpm which is not stable enough for video capture (especially when the drive is also running hte system and the application) I would daisy chain your camcorder through a fast external hard drive (7200 rpm & firewire, you'll need two firewire ports on drive) If you also buy a USB 2 pen drive to store the application file on then
your machine will then fly

Thanks mate. Didn't know that hard disk speed will be a factor. I believe mine is 4500rpm as it is more than 2 years old.

Studio 9 also requires a minimum of 512MB, preferably 1GB memory in addition to a fast HDD. You may get away with 5400 RPM HDD but to be honest laptops are not the best machines for video editing unless you are using the latest models with fast processor and HDD.
