Recording in the rain

Hi I was wondering has anyone any tips on recording in the rain My main problem is the when using a rain cover to keep the camera dry is that the mic is picking up the sound of the rain drops on the plastic cover.
How waterproof is the mic if the mic is kept out from under the cover?
I do have a windsheild can I put a plastic cover under the mic windsheild?
Has anyone any thoughts on this subject . Thank you
The camera is the Canon XM2

a rycote windjammer will not be waterproof but for short spells the water should wick into it rather than into the mic. make sure to dry it out (and have some silica gel in you kit bag.

Try and get some distance between yourself and the subject (use a radio mic if you can) then optically zoom (gets as many rain drops between you and the subject as possible) and try and light the raindrops up - one of those powerful torches works well if you hit the right angle.
