Sony ECM-HS1 microphone

I am looking for an external microphone for my HC85 camcorder. The Sony recommended one is the ECM-HS1 gun/zoom mike. Does anyone have any experience of this? I intend to use it to pick up sounds from distant wildlife and also, hopefully, to cut out the aimless chatter from people around me while I am filming. Will it be noticeably better than the onboard mike for this? Are there any better alternatives in the sub £100 price range?

Surely somebody has used this mike - it has been around for a few years. If not can anybody recommend a suitable mike or at least tell me if I am not going to get a significant sound improvement unless I pay big money.
