Sony DCR-HC14e capture device missing

I am the owner of a Sony DCR-HC14e video camera. If I connect the camera via firewire to my (also new) pc, it does not detect it. Edit programs like, Ulead or pinnacle, indicate that no video capture driver is installed or no device is connected

Can someone tell me what file/driver I am missing or whether there is some kind of conflicting applications that prevents my pc from detecting my sony.

Please help, as I am deparate to edit some videos (I bought the camera and pc last christmas, with the execuse to my wife to make nice videos.................pressure is high, I am running out of time.)

I have the same trouble with my hc19e
