Problem Editing Digital Video On Pc

I Want To Edit Video From A Sony Dcr Pc8e Connected By Firewire To My New Computer With Windows Xp, However It Wont Recognise My Camera? Do I Need A Sony Set Up Disc For The Camera Or What?

have tried windows movie maker, ulead and nero. it seems to regognise the camera initially and then they all say that there isnt a device detected. ive tried two different firewire leads , in two different ports. the camera is switched on and set to vcr . i'm baffled.
