Very Important, Read All!

This solve the same problem in my mv650i.
Remove both batteries, wait for a few seconds and place into the camcorder the batteries again.
Then adjust region, date and time.
I hope that help you.

If anyone is thinking of avoiding repair and writing off their camcorder in favour of a new model etc please contact me! I would most likely be prepared to purchase your 600i/650i off you for a fair price.

Unhappy MV600 Problem

I have just been struck by the dreaded MV600i blank screen after 24 months of ownership.
(Paid £562.00 ).
Been through the 'contact Canon' formality and predictably been referred to the local Canon authorized repair shop-don't go there !
This is how I see it. Nothing I can do operating the camera ,would cause this particular failure- (Canon did not disagree)
This means that we are talking of an inherent design fault
which is completely down to Canon - however to make matters worse this model has been withdrawn from sale. They describe this euphemistically as 'archived'.
To put the situation into context, I have owned, and still use, an Aiwa analogue Camera for 11 years. No problems.

I will be contesting this with Canon as best I can

Oh no

Oh no, i just this minute brought a MV600 of an ebay seller, they say that its 18months old and its a used camera. I did some research on the cam and found this, and my the worry's set in. Im not sure how used, it says it works, but if a fault does occure, days weeks or months after will i be cover/able to use the 'sales of goods act'/ 'consumer direct letter' posted in the other post.
If so who/where shall i complain to, If not what should be the course of action.
Hopeing that these problems wont happent to me;fingers crossed.
I payed £130 + postage and insurance for the camera.

Thanks for the help

Black Screen MV630i (Me too !!)

I've had the same problem since earlier this year.

I bought the Canon MV630i in May 2003. My wife was expecting a baby and I bought it to record the babys early years. I was pretty impressed with it's features and ease of use.

At around 20 months (after warrantee !!) I'd recorded about 4.5 hours in total and the screen went suddenly Black when recording. On playback I found the sound was there but no image.

After this I had spells when it worked but after a couple of weeks I just had the black screen all the time.

I had thought the problem was just with my camcorder and I was going to see whether I could get it repaired, but the other day I got a email from a guy at work who'd bought the next model on. He was experiencing exactly the same problem. I was pretty surprised that the only other person I knew that had a similar camcorder had the same problem.

I bought the camcorder for £450 and so that's £100 per hour of recording. Seems a bit on the expensive side, could have hired a professional to do the recording at that price.

I'd really be interested in what Canon have to say about this.

Common fault with Canon 600i

My Canon 600i developed much the same fault I get vertical coloured stripes on the screen when I try to record.
According to the forum this is a very common fault and is obviously a design fault that develops over time.
Think of the hundreds of other 600 series owners not members of this forum that must be out there thinking the fault is unique to there camera.
Has anyone got any ideas how we can draw this to the attention of Canon with a united front demanding that we be compensated or better still have the cameras repaired free of cost.
When I contacted Canon I was fobbed off to a list of repair specialists.
Hopefully there is somone out there with better skills than I at orginising some sort of petition.
They would certainly have my support.

Canon 600i camcorder

In order to get a clearer picture ( unintended pun ) of the problem situation re the 600i model, could I ask if any AV forum members have, or know of, a Canon MV600i camcorder which is trouble free and older than 24 months.

I think this question should be related to the number of hours of usage.I also think that appealing to Canon is going to get nowhere.

As I have said before, there is a worldwide issue with many different model Canon camcorders and it would seem that the standard response is to offer a repair in warranty, which never seems to last,or if the camera is out of warranty to offer a repair with a minimum charge of about £140.

Either way it is clear that these products are not "Fit for Purpose " and people in the UK need to pursue claims against Canon under the UK Sale of Goods Act.

In America there are people who are mounting a Class action in the courts to get compensation from Canon.

Just to add if you have not read another thread relating to canon, contained in that thread is a link to an American victim of Canon who has started a website to publicise this disgrace

My 650i has just manifested an identical problem. It is 18 months old and has been used in total about 6 hours. That doesn't seem right to me. What is the general consensus on how to proceed?

Making a Claim

You can instigate a small claim with Money Claim Online (************/exvkn) which is backed by HM Courts Service. The How to Compain (www.howtocomplain.com) site also offers tips for remedial action.

I have had a reply to my letter to Canon see my post 24-6-05 The main part of the reply is this as written:-- Like most Manufacturers we have to draw a time limit on a guarantee period and in the case of your product this is 12 months. however on this occasion only whilst not admitting liability, we would like to offer a free of charge repair.

Should you wish to accept this offer please send your unit to the above address etc, etc, etc.
I have sent my camera off to Canon with a covering letter pointing out that I expect the camera to fail again after a further 18 - 24 months as the fault is inbuilt and would again expect it to be repaired or replaced. I will post there reply here.
Anyone wanting further details of who to contact and wording of letter please email me and I'll see if I can help.

Thumbs up Canon fixed camera FREE!

I managed to get Canon to fix my MV650i camera free of charge eventually.
They said that in this instance that they would repair the camera just this once as a goodwill gesture!
First they sent me a bill for £132 before they would repair the camera, I got back to them and eventually the wavered the charge.
If there's no known fault with these cameras, why have so many have the blank screen problem, in what seems the same sort of period of time and 5 hours of use.
They replaced the ccd assembly.

All I can say is to be persistent it payed off in the end for me and it looks like someone else seems to be getting somewhere.

Amazon Response

I have received a prompt reply from Amazon. Here it is FYI
Thank you for writing to Amazon.co.uk.

We currently do not offer an extended warranty on the Electronics and
Photo items sold on our website. We recommend consulting the manual
that came with the package for warranty and service information.

As your order 026-6317157-8929264, come with our one year warranty
unfortunately we are not in a position to offer you a
replacement/refund as requested as this period has clearly elapsed.

May I advise that you contact the manufacturer regarding this issue
as they are in a better position to assist you with your claim.

Thank you for your interest in Amazon.co.uk.

This is pretty much as I expected.

Here's another...my MV600i is less than 2 years old and was recommended to me by another 600i user. Both our cameras stopped showing camera images in the same week!! The sales are on in the UK, if my repair quotes are similar to others users here Canon may have lost a couple of previously loyal customers.

Unhappy MV630i - failed ccd sensor

Can I join your club too? Same old story, purchased in Aug2003 for recording my young family, under 2 years down the road - you guessed it... vertical lines only in both viewfinders - but it does record sound. Going by previous threads, this points to a failed CCD.

I've followed previous advice and also advice from my local Trading standards - been back to where I purchased it and entered into quite a few letters - me asking for a free repair under the Sale of Goods act, them saying no.

Continuing to follow Trading standards advice on a weekly basis - will post updates, seems the best way to go is to address the retailer where it was bought - your contract is with them, not Canon.

Although, it's interesting to see the above recent threads where a gent actually got Canon to carry out a free repair - that may be the last resort.

Worth nothing also, if you purhcased the camcorder using any form of credit, i.e. card, buy now - pay later, etc. you can (as I have) get in touch with the credit company and ask for a full/partial refund for the goods. They have equal responsibility for the goods as the retailer! - contact your local TS office for clear info.

Will keep you all posted - please bear me in mind for any watchdog / petition, etc.

2 more users with black screen problem

I bought my MV600i from Amazon (best seller in camcorders) in August 2003. Last week the black screen problem happened. My sister also bought the same camera soon after and had the same failure a few months ago (I thought it was a one-off). Now I found this forum and have contacted Canon UK.

They are going to assess the camera and have indicated that a free repair should be made unless the fault is misuse or wear and tear.

Does anyone know whether the repaired camera is likely to fail again in 18 months? Or does a Canon repair fix the design issue?

CCD imager problems

I have seen this fault many times in my service lab. The CCD imager is at fault, one or more of the tiny connecting wires comes adrift from the imager substrate. These wires are 10 microns wide (a human hair is around 30), and are part of the hermetically sealed CCD package. Repair involves replacing the CCD assembly & re-calibrating the electronics to match the replacement imager. Adjustments are made using jigs & software. CCD failure on this huge scale has not been seen before & Canon are by no means alone with this problem. Make the right noises, to the right people, and you will get satisfaction.

Regards,

Peter Brereton, West Midlands, UK

MV630i continued...

Update from previous post... I've been pursuing the retailer from where I purchased the camcorder - C**rys - over three weeks of store visits, letter writing, trading standards advice, etc. On saturday, they said that I would have to pay them £120 for the unit to be sent for testing, to see if was a manufacturing fault, if it was, they would refund me the £120...

Trading standards have negotiated with them and got them down to £60, even though I have supplied them with a link to this forum - this organisation won't accept this evidence provided by their customer that this unit has a manufacturing fault and I really don't fancy giving somebody £60 - what if their advisor says that it's not a manufacturing fault - I won't see the £60 again will I?

I think I will pursue earlier contributor's (Stan F) comments about dealing direct with Canon with a hard copy of this forum.

I definitely will not be spending any more of my cash at C**rys - in fact, I will be asking what stores policies are regarding such issues, before I hand over any money in future.

Question Me too

I seems as though my MV650i has dragged me into the club. It's almost 2 years old and has recorded around 19 hours and today it died. The symptoms are just as have been described, it'll play back footage but not film or photo anything but sound. I'd be pleased to add my support to any action that may be needed to get Canon to sort these faulty goods they have been pedaling on us.

If anyone has any joy with Canon or with a cheap repairer please let me Know

Cheers

Andy

Hi, I Am The Recent Addition To The Ever Growing Group Of Canon Exploited People.
My Canon Also Stopped Working In The Simillar Way.... Blank Screen And Only Playback Possible.
Its Only 22 Months Old Brought From Dixons For £499.00 And Used For Only 4-5 Hrs Over This Period.
Its Very Unfortunate That All The Ccd Problems Have Happened When They Are Reaching The 18-24 Month Period, But Despite This Canon Has Failed To Give An Adequate Response To The Complaints.

If You Can Help Me What Should I Do Now.
Should I Get In Contact With Canon Or Dixons .
Please Reply.

Thanking You In Anticipation
