Panasonic NV-GS120 -> PC Video Editing??

I know there are a couple of people out there with this camcorder (or similar versions of the same model range). There is indeed another thread with a lower model where the user has the same probolem.

Could somone please explain to me how I can edit the video on the pc?

The camera only came with a USB and I can only seem to get stills off it. Also, by reading the software guide that came with the camera, it reads as if you can only get stills off it - which can't be right. I was under the impression I could import it to the pc?

Doesn't it need Firewire? It didn't come with a Firewire cable, but I'm sure I read somewhere that you need it? Or not?

I am now worrying that I've mis-purchaced and bought a camera that won;t let me edit movies on the pc.

As well as the software that came with it, I have the latest version of Ulead VideoStudio (ver. 8) which is supposed to be really easy to use.

Anyone got any pointers/help?

Cheers

James

Your camera has DV In/Out according to specs.

If you look at the connections (under the tab) you will see the USB connection (which I'm sure you recognise) & a smaller connection which is a 4 pin firewire connection.

You will need a 4pin to 6pin firewire cable (which you can get from most camera/ computer suppliers).
You will also need a firewire input on your computer (if you haven't got one firewire cards are inexpensive/easy to fit & again can be found from most computer retailers)

Plug the 4pin end of cable into the camera , 6pin into PC connection , turn the camera into VCR/playback mode & then use your editing software to capture (controlling the the camera remotely thru video editing software)

Ha! Oh dear! I found it. There was a secret compartment with the DV out which I'd missed!

Anyway, using Ulead VideoStudio 8.0 I grabbed this shot:

Surely this is not right. It's awful. The camera is nearly the top of the range.

Help!

looks very much as though you have not selected the correct capture settings in UVS8 - particularly with regard to field order. for capturing DV via firewire ensure you have 'lower field first' set in addition to the other PAL parameters.

1) Filmed indoors in low light (noisey)
2) Slow shutter, lots of motion (blurred)
3) Interlaced (comb effect)

Its no wonder most people freak when viewing material on a monitor.

Unfortunately, the quality of DV video is not outstanding by specification. In cheap (*cough*) cameras (below ~£900) most people with a keen eye are disapointed.

It's fine if I hook up to the TV. So as mentioned above it must be the settings in the software.

I'll have a fiddle, thanks

Settings in Software.

I don't have that program to tell you where to look though.

Hi Norbert 666
I have the Panasonic GS120, and it works fine. I see from other posts that you have found the DV out port under the battery?? good has your PC got a firewire in connection? The Video MUST be captured with firewire, not USB. Are you using XP.

Thanks. I've managed to capture video now. But am having problems with Ulead (see post above).

Got the Firewire etc sorted - the bloody thing was well hidden!

Cheers

Hi James, I have not tried Ulead, Try using Magix Movies on CD & DVD Version 3.0 you can down load a free trial version from www.magix.com I find this very good and not to difficult.
