Hi, and Welcome...
Canon is not a Brand that gets much exposure here, although I like the HF G10 which supports LANC and dual card-slots.
However, Pana(sonic) seem to keep consumers interested with a wide range of updates and so on.

Thanks for the welcome and feedback.
The XA10 supports remote (LANC) and also has dual card slots, but I've not used either yet. It's not a cheap camera and wasn't sure if anyone here has one, but thought I'd ask anyway and share experiences of this professional camera. I'm not a pro and filming is just a pure fun hobby for me, btw.

I was looking at one a year or so back, it ticked a lot of boxes for me, except one major one, only a 10x zoom.
I appreciate not everyone want's a long zoom but I do and it's top of my list.

Canon XA10 review - Digital Lifestyle - Macworld UK
I Would not class it as pro by a long shot, the XLR audio and cary handle dual card slots and more HD space are different from the G10,but for around £1500 it is a nice cam,the 10x zoom is a let down pro cams have longer as a rule,i once had a sony FX7 prosumer cam like the XA10 with a 20X,having said that many people dont need long zooms. The best thing with the G10 & XA10 cams are their great low light filming ability.

Tele converters or wide angle lenses can be attached for those who need the extra option, I don't personally, but each to their own needs. This camera is about so much more and it’s not until you’re able to pick one up and play around with it to see what this camera is all about where it copes superbly on auto, it defeats having a camera like this when using manual or cinema mode and being in complete control of everything with the myriad of touch screen menu controls or use of a remote.

I do agree the XA10 copes well in low light levels, it also comes with infra red (choice of green or white) for those who go ghost hunting, lol. I particularly like how lush depth of field shots look on the XA10, with the aid of touch screen or manual focus ring, those lovely focus/out of focus shots look incredible with depth. It also has a cinema mode and cinema filter to render footage with a cinematic look, but overall, it’s all about being able to control everything manually together with an optional attached or wireless XLR pro mic.

The best thing I like and why I went for the XA10 is the small compact size that’s as good at delivering what much higher end cameras do at an affordable realistic price, albeit still expensive, the results are professional looking, hence why I use this word to loosely describe the XA10.

Yes, I have an XA10. I have two audio setups. I use the on-camera mic holder with my Rode NTG-1 and the foam wildshield.

When using my dead cat cover, I use a cold-shoe mount to keep the fur well out of shot.

I discussed it here:

TIP: Mounting an NTG-1 or NTG-2 Mic on the XA10

Cool, a fellow XA10 owner

Like you, I have the NTG-1 as well but use the XA10 holder. I can see the advantages of using the cold-shoe mount for many reasons and something I may think about doing myself for the simple fact it’s useful for me to quickly detach the whole mic unit away from the camera with little hassle. At the moment my mic and dead cat is permanently fixed at all times and for all videoing scenarios and the hairs are just out of shot with the dead cat I’ve got which is not the standard Rode dead cat but the WS6 deluxe dead cat. I’ve not long had mine and it’s been fun not only videoing stuff, but having complete control over audio adds new dimensions to video productions now.

Canon XA10 or Canon GH10

Hi Everyone,

I have an old Panasonic NV-DW 110 3CCD Video Camera. I currently edit on iMac - iMovie - Looking to purchase FCP

I also own a Canon 60D.

However since I use my video for shooting Kids in the swimming pool and for school sports running and for Golf etc - the 60D does not suit as it does not have auto focus.

I am thinking of purchasing either the Canon XA10 or GH10 and would welcome comments as to which I should purchase and why.

Anyone consider any other consumer camera better than the two mentioned above?

Would it be really necesserary to have an external Rode Mic with the XA10?

Who is currently offering the best price for an XA10.

I can acquire a new GH10 for £895 which appears to be the best price posssible.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

PS: On second thoughts it would perhaps be better if I posted this as a completely new Post
