I'd like to import footage from my JVC camcorder to iMovie on my Mac but the camcorder doesn't have a firewire port just a USB port. iMovie tells me i need firewire. Is there anything I can do without buying a new camcorder? Help!
AFAIK if the camcorder is a DV (digital) cam then it will have a firewire port, and as it has a USB port it must be digital. The problem is that firewire is also known by a few other names: iLink, ieee1394, DV port. If you see any of these then they are exactly the same as firewire.
If in any doubt then just let us know the model number and we will find out for sure.

Early JVC camers such as the GR-DV1, GR-DVJ70, GR-DVX and a few other models did not have DV ports, but the fact that it this camera has a USB port means that it is a newer model so it's almost certain that there is a Firewire port there as well.
If you had a PC it would show up as soon as you turned it on
Sorry I know this is no help but PC compatibilty.
What about installing it / registering it through the Operating
system first, as an external device. Then load up the editing software and it may recognise it.
The cam should always be connected via firewire and powered on in VCR mode before starting the capture software. Otherwise the software is very unlikely to find the cam once it is connected & powered on.
