Best: AVI, back onto camcorder tape.

A quicktime movie at avi compression on a DVD should also work, a 4.7gb disc would have just about enough space for a quicktime avi movie

DVD: Though save at the lowest compression/highest quality. DVD- is more widely compatible than DVD+.
DVD uses MPEG2 compression.

SVCD: similar quality to Hi8, motion can be sometimes slightly affected.
You can fit a half hour of SVCD quality on a blank cd, however this format is not as widely used as either DVD or VCD, check your player is compatible first.
A cheap way of geting highish quality footage onto disc.

VCD: Can look similar to VHS, you'll fit an hour on blank cd, but the compression is pretty high.

MPEG4: Ropey as hell, great for web streaming, crap for anything else.
Tiny files though. Well suited to email (a 20minute film would be around 30MB, getting within the realms of emailing, however you would be hard pushed to watch it for 20 minutes).

There are loads of others like cinepak (infinately variable from zero ti massive compression) sorenson (a mac favoured format, promising high quality despite potentially high compression, rumoured to be macs favoured successor to MPEG4), you can author real media and windows media films, though the same problems occour as with MPEG4.
