camcorders, DVD and editing

Hi

Dong some general research on camcorders.

I know you can do some pretty advanced editing on computer, but can you edit on camcorders as well? What kind of things can you do?

Is there a difference between DVD and mini-DV camcorders? How about the difference between DVD-RAM camcorders and DVD-RW camcorders?

Chris

Editing on a camcorder is only going to be very basic, and can only be done live as you are recording. You can do basic things such as add a title (nees to be setup prior to filming), fade in & out. Having never used a DVD cam I am unsure if you are able to erase unwanted scenes etc on rewriteable media such as DVD-RW/DVD-RAM.

Well the obvious difference between a DVD cam & a DV cam is that the DV cam is tape based
There is a big difference in the PQ between the 2. DVD cams record useing high compression that causes a lower PQ. Editing these recodings on a PC will therefore cause a further reduction in quality.
Due to the high compression DVD cams cause pixelation with fast moveing objects. There are no such problems with DV cams.
A DV cam can record at full quality for 1 hour per tape, where a DVD cam at best quality is only around 20 minutes.
LP on DV will give 90 minutes with only slight quality drop, where lower quality settings on a DVD cam are very noticeable.
DVD cams are a fair bit bigger than the smallest DV cams.

Mark.
