If you're running Windows XP, then Movie Maker is probably good enough for what you need - make sure you upgrade to version 2.0 (free download from Microsoft) as it's a far better product than version 1 that ships with XP.
If, after using it, you feel you need something more advanced then you can start looking at the likes of Pinnacle Studio, ULead Video Studio, which cost a few tens of pounds or so, right up to products such as Vegas, Pinnacle Edition and Adobe Premier which cost hundreds of pounds.
