Before I say anything my knowledge on video and editing is limited.

What I want to be able to do is edit a programme that has been recorded onto a DVD-R via a consumer DVD recorder. The idea is to be able to download it onto a PC and use a software package such as Adobe Premiere to edit the programme.

Can this be done?

I do know that when a programme is recorded on a DVD-R via a DVD recorder it is a VOB fie???

Do I need to convert the VOF file into a AVI file?

All help appreciated.

A VOB file is a Video Object File & is part of the basic file structure of DVD-Video . It is essentially a MPEG-2 file but it can have more than one audio (or video file) running together within the stream.

It will depend on what NLE (Non Linear Editing) software you have as to whether it will deal with VOB or MPEG files. Because of the temporal compression used in MPEG they are not that easy to edit as you can only effectively cut on certain frames (not all the frames contain full data.)

It is possible to convert your VOB files to AVI files (the preferred format for most NLE) for editing but you may notice a quality hit.

Thanks. I have access to Adobe Premiere and the editing I want to do is basic and simple stuff. A slight hit in quality is not a problem for my application.

Which are good conversion programs?

I don't use Premiere but I suspect you could then load the mpeg files to the timeline & re-encode as .avi before editing.

Use CyberLink PowerDirector to edit ur video. Its very simple to use and accepts *.vob files. If not use Moonlight Cordless Muxer Software to demux (Split ur files), in to n mpeg2 file and n ac3/PCM file. Then u can use em in Premiere.

Had a look at this link, (don't know why, I'm nowhere near ready to do any of that stuff!!) but I notice the author talks in dollars. Would being american affect either the advise or the programmes? (regional coding, NTSC etc)

General advice will be the same

The programs you use etc will work fine with NTSC or PAL
