Which Rendering Settings For Vegas?

Hi,

I have been getting used to my new Canon HF200 for a few weeks now and I have been fiddling about with Sony Vegas also.

I am not totally up to speed with all the settings in Vegas in terms of how to set up my project and then which settings to use for final rendering of the project.

Do I have to match the settings of the HF200 in terms of, e.g. 50p, 720-30p, PAL DV Widescreen, etc. to set up the project?

Do I have to match the render to the camera output? E.g. if I shoot in cine mode at 25p should I match this some how in the project??

Is there much of a difference between an AVI render and a WMV render?
So far I have noticed that AVI looks better quality and the WMV shows some horizontal 'interference' on footage when viewed back, although is a smaller file.

Really confused, is there a basic guide somewhere to help me understand?

Yes otherwise there will be a lot of rerendering once you do an edit , even one as simple as trimming

No you can render however you wish, as long as it is available in
Vegas, even if that happens to be the camcorders own setting, bearing in mind the software own rendering codec may not be identical to the camcorders

AVI is not a file format but a wrapper format which can be " host" to DV AVI or any of divx, xvid, mjpeg or mpeg4 ,
These codecs are more compressed than DV AVI
Saying that some of the mpeg4 " avi" files may be less compressed than the wmv.. which can be good depending on how compressed they are
There are compression artifacts which may be what you are seeing but if it is due to deinterlaced footage
There is WMV-HD.

There are several , but it would take more than a thread post to cover even the basics
Specific queries about what you are trying to do would be easier as the answers would be bite sized.

Have you found the built-in tutorials yet? I find them very useful and this page

Sony Creative Software - Vegas Pro Training Series, hosted by Les Stroud

Has some good videos as well

Re: Which Rendering Settings For Vegas?

Thanks Senu,

I think I have made some progress. I tried rendering a single shot of the project I have as WMV. I then changed the deinterlace method for the project. 1 = none, 2 = blend 3 = interpolate.

With each render, any fast moving things, e.g. dog's tail wagging, became more natural looking. The first showed horizontal lines across the moving part, second slightly better and the third looked normal.

When I rendered I went for default template. Will I see any difference to worry about if I choose another, e.g. 8Mbps HD 1080-30 video? What do they all mean?

All the output settings will be one optimised for
PC
HDTV playback
And will try to give you a good compromise between file size and quality
The interlace can be turned on in the media player , but a lot of your trial and error methods are not a bad way to find what works best for you
The linked tutorials by Bruin are also helpful for other things
