Help me connect my new Panasonic HDC SD10 to my Sony DVD Recorder HXD870

HI, Iv'e just got a new Panasonic HDC SD10 to replace an old Sony mini DV camcorder. When I was using that camcorder I used the DV ports on both the camcorder and DVD recorder, and all was fine, but on this new camcorder Panasonic HDC SD10 there is no dv port I would like to use the best quality connection. The ports that are on the Panasonic HDC SD10 are mini HDMI, Mini USB, line out jacks

Is there any way I can connect the mini HDMI port on the camcorder to the DV port on the DVD recorder?

Thanks for any help

HDMI is not compatible with DV/FIREWIRE , you next best quality is component 400/500 lines does you dvdrecorder accept it, most likely not.

The next is composite the lowers quality around 240lines

Editing on a PC or resonabley powerful notebook is you best option to retain HD quality.

Cheers for that. What about the Mini USB port on the camcorder? can that be used to connect to the DV port on the DVD recorder? if not does that mean I need a new DVD recorder. If so what ports should I look out for so I can get the best quality, Thanks again

Re: Help me connect my new Panasonic HDC SD10 to my Sony DVD Recorder HXD870

USB will not connect to DV/FIREWIRE , even if your camcorder had a DV output your sony dvdrecorder most likely would not accept a HD signal , my HD JVC camcorder has a DV and it will not work with my Panasonic DVDrecorder with a DV port.

You need a PC to edit the hd video then you can burn to a DVD and playback on a blue-ray dvd player or sony ps3 to retain the HD quality.

Or you can use a PC to just copy the HD files via usb to a pc and burn them straight to a dvd without editing. and play them as above.

My ideal machine would be a blu-ray recorder with a 1tb hdd and a usb port to copy the hd files from your camcorder to the hdd of the blu-ray recorder then you can edit the hd files on you tv and when done burn them to blu-ray disks, if this machine exists i dont know.

Not really

The problem with the AVCHD camcorders is that they expect you to record as HD and therfre the only Sd output which your DVD recorder can ake is the composite analogue ( which is ..er c**P)
In fact even the tape HDV whichhave firewir d=only output Sd via this to a VD recorder but they at least give you better SD quality. Some actually also have s-video out as well
Unless you buy a Blu ray recorder ( curently still far from pocket frendly) which may take a component ( im not sure of HDMI input; the HDCP may put a spanner in the works )
You will have to make Sd DVDs on the PC by downconverting AVCHD or put up with composite analogue

The model linked below has 500Gb and most of your "ideal" machines wish list
Cost a fair bit though.. I would not buy one myself. (In the old days I spent £800 on a Panasonic DVD recorder HS2 with HDD (40Gb))
It has 2 smaller capacity siblings
