How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Hello all

I'm liking my canon md101.. it's a video tape camera that I had to download to the computer, and now:

My question is one that would apply to anyone and not specifically for my canonmd101.

Please can I get some help with getting the footage that I have already downloaded to the computer to go on a dvd so I can play it on the dvd player?

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Or if you are running Windows Vista or 7 then you can use the bundled Windows DVD Maker program to author the video files and burn to disc - it is very easy to use.
Otherwise any DVD authoring software will do what you want. If you have a copy of Nero or similar then that should do it. Just use the 'create video DVD' or whatever option along those line the program has.

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Thanks guys.

Yes I do have Vista, what is the bundled dvd maker program you talk of, is it movies maker?

I also have Nero, maybe I selcted the wrong one to make it only work on the computer and not on the dvd player?

The other thing is, I have 4 10 minute footages that I want to put on the DVD, and would like to watch without having to forward to lets say the third footage, just would like to selct whichever footage scene with the remote control rather, any help is most appreciated.

No, Movie Maker is the video editing program and that has no DVD authoring built in. DVD Maker is a separate program that is a dedicated DVD authoring program to make DVD video discs that will play in a standard DVD player. You should be able to find it on the Start menu under All Programs.

To create a DVD that will play in a DVD player you need to select the DVD-Video option

In any DVD authoring program you can just add the 4 video files and then when you go through the options you will be asked if you want a DVD Menu. If you do then the 4 files will be added to the menu and can therefore be played directly by selecting them.

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

How do you mean?

Nero . DVD flick does not need Nero ( Did you try it?)

If you want to burn with Nero. when you chose DVD video, you import the Video TS folder created earlier contents into the video TS that Neo presents to you

You cannot ordinarily use the DV AVI file in Nero unless you Use Nero Vision to arthor a DVD video

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Hi there,

Shall I go ahead and download the dvd flick to do this, will it take my footage in the format it is in? That is the problem with Nero, it wants me to have it some other kind of file, so I guess that would mean I could not just use the wmv or avi file to add into the TS folder in the first place or am I missing something obvious. How about the Nero Vision you mention, is that free software to convert the files?
I was thinking of buying an adaptec videoh media centre to sort all these problems out, appreciate your help.

With thanks

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Flick will accept more variant formats than Nero you should be able to just drop whatever you have in ,As for nero and the TS file it only wants the
.Vob files that are in the Ts folder

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

To create a video DVD that will play on any DVD player using Nero:

Open Nero StartSmart
Select DVD as the disc type from the drop down menu at the top
Move the mouse over the photo & film icon
Select 'Make Your Own DVD-Video'

The above will then open Nero Vision and the program should take you through all the steps needed to create the DVD with menu to select the desired clip. It will convert the video to MPEG-2 and do everything that is required to burn the DVD.

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Thanks all.

I think i'm on track with DVD flick, but it's late now, and the encoding part requires me to wait the amount of minutes I have created on DVD and then burn the converted TS file with Nero, so will give it a shot tommorow.

It would be much easier just to convert the file in an instant, surely that's possible, perhaps that's what is suggested with the Nero vision, but I don't see that software with my Nero, please let me know if it's possible so I don't need to be spending too much time with DVD flick, although I will appreciate the Flick when I see it works tommorow.

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

DVD Flick didn't work, a pop up came up in the encoding process and it said there was an error in the ecoding, there was a bunch of info data in the pop up box which didn't mean anything to me, and there were no other instructions, it just failed. Please help me to get this done.

They are less likely to work
If you import with WMM .. best to import as DV AVI, dont accept the WMM default which is wmv and wil give you poorer quality video.
Why not try a test import with
WIN DV
Then import ionto DVD flick and see
OTHO you can download a trial of Movie Factory ( Corel) and see how you get on with it
I mght have an older unused version if it works for you.

If you use the full version of movie factory, it will
Cyberlink Power Producer, is another

AS I suggested turning a wmv to DVD will result in poor quality..

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Hi there,

When you say full version, you mean pay for it right? and so i'll take it that if I pay for it only then I can burn? what do you mean by it will
Cyberlink Power Producer.

I'm sure this all doesn't have to be so complicated, but it certainly has wasted alot of my time. I don't really care so much for the quality if I can get the wmv to dvd but it seems impossible anyway, if you know a way please run them through me, and I have managed to convert to AVI and also MPEG and they all don't work with Flick.

"Cant you recapture as DV AVI?
"
I don't know what you are saying here, are you saying that it might be worth my while to transfer the footage from the vido tape to store somewhere as an avi, even then I don't know what to do with the avi as the converted ones don't worki'm very dumb with this so appreciate your help to simplify things.

DV AVI will work ,it is the native file as stored on tape.. converting the wmv to avi9 divx) is not what I meant

If you capture from tape with WIN DV or configure the capture from tape via WMM as full quality DV AVI that is what you will get , not wmv

Yes, especially if you are coming from a DV AVI where 1 hrs fooratge is 13Gb and this has to fit a 4.7Gb disc
This is of course comparing the size of DV AVI to mpeg2 but even if your starting material is a bigger sized mpeg2 it wil be shrunk down to fit disc
However the idea is often that if you already have mpeg2 you should not try to fit too much onto a disc because
Quality will drop
It will take time due to need to reeencode

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Oh i see, so in my case it will be DV AVI that I should be transferring the footage to and not use the movie maker any more?

I have just tried flick after using a trial convertor software to convert it, it turned up with back ground music on it so I won't be using that again, but i'm on track, so i'm converting twice actually, and had success to get the files to vob and then use nero to burn, and i can see how much it has shrunk and all fitted to one disc, and finally play on the dvd player, the only thing is that it is time consuming, the flick makes you wait a while too, is this an issue for all converting software? thanks

You can use it but you need to know how to use it for DV AVI, othrwse give it a miss

I have just tried flick after using a trial convertor software to convert it, it turned up with back ground music on it so I won't be using that again, but i'm on track, so i'm converting twice actually, and had success to get the files to vob and then use nero to burn, and i can see how much it has shrunk and all fitted to one disc, and finally play on the dvd player, the only thing is that it is time consuming, the flick makes you wait a while too, is this an issue for all converting software? thanks
Conversion always takes time. and converting more than once even more so.
Hardware with more grunt makes light work of this ( ie C2d faster than P4 , Quad core even faster: More RAm =more speed)
However you should avoid converting twice. DVD flick shoud be able to use DV AVI from the camcorder without you needing to use a converter
If your mpeg2 are the right size DVD flick should not need to reencode them

The movie make has no options to allow me to use AVI, just wmv.
It does, otherwise use WinDV
What version of windows do you have?
I just tried with the Vista Version ( see screen shots below)

Quote:
the flick says no video track found and will not use the converted files from the wmv, the ones recaptured to avi do work on flick, only I have the wmv files of some that I have taped over, so I need the wmv ones, and the total video convertor wont work, i need to use something else, please can u recommed something else to convert the wmv
I guess the Easiest thing to do would be to import the wmv into a video editing program , ( any) then output as DV AVI rather than all this reconverting
And
Really, Dont reuse tapes...

Re: How can I get video footage downloaded on computer to play on a DVD player?

Ive edited your post instead of quoting it ..
But your post is in quotes and my replies bolded

I think the mistakes were
having the footage as wmv in the first place
then reusing the tapes

So far you have not used any paid for software which is Xp friendly. That is what you need
As I said in your other thread . PM me
