Capturing DV from JVC GR-DV700 - Help

Hi,

First of all, as you can probably tell I'm a newbie to camcorders, although not to PCs.

I bought a JVC GR-DV700 before Christmas with the express thought of dropping the video onto DVD, using my PC DVD-writer.

This seems fairly straight forward with the software that is available these days.

Well I seem to be stumbling at the very first hurdle: importing the video onto my PC. I cannot seem to get the video onto the PC in a high enough resolution to be relevant to go onto DVD.

I am using the USB link from the camera, (still not got a firewire cable yet). If I use the Pixela ImageMixer software bundled with the camera, it seems to be of a higher quality than say Ulead VideoStudio, but still not 704x576.

As far as I can tell this seems to be an issue with the USB capture driver, but I cannot find a different one anywhere.

Will this problem go away if I buy a firewire cable?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers

Mark

Mark, you'll be much better off using the firewire

Hmmm, was pretty much the conclusion I was getting to. In fact I've ordered one today.

Thanks for the feedback, hopefully this will figure the problem out.

The manual doesn't say anything about the difference in the two transfer mediums at all.

Oh well, fingers crossed.

You will never get good quality video transfer over a USB connection, it is really only any good for transferring still images from your camcorder. If you already have a firewire card in Your PC you only need a cable. most cameras have a 4 pin socket and most PC's have a 6 pin socket so you'll need a 4pin to 6pin cable and these are pretty standard.

If you do not have firewire on your PC that is easily remedied by fitting a card, any will do and you should be able to buy a card and cable for £20 - £25

Ulead Video studio is a good basic editing suite and I would use that if you have it. Don't forget to set the capture format to the best quality for your needs, click on the 'Capture' tab at the top of your screen then choose 'Format' from the left of the screen.
