As the title suggests...

This is nearly the kind of budget I am at (with a little stretch). I was also looking at the Sony CX105E (?) but having to use Sony's memory cards and a couple of other things have dropped it from my list (unless I am forced to lower the old budget!).

Have trawled youtube and both seem to produce good images. The trusted reviews site also reports good things for both.

So, which is it to be? The Panasonic or the Canon?

I purchased the Canon HG20 in January and it works really well. I am impressed with the picture qaulity and the features. I have used it to film family events, sports, recitals etc. all with good luck. The only problem I find is the software package it comes with. It is extremely limiting for what you can do with the software and extremely limiting.

I used the HG 10 and was happy with it.( only a mere 40GB HDD , but that was then)
Seems the 20 is carrying on with that good work

As for software there is alternative software though, and most bundled software tend to be just about usable though this varies by Brand
