24/25fps sources for the same film

Hi there,

I live in UK PAL world, and I have some multi-format media which will eventually be combined into a single finished piece. I’m not assembling it myself so won’t get the headaches personally, I but don’t want to make things too onerous for the editor.

* An hour of Red footage, filmed at 4K 24fps;

* 20 minutes of Quicktime animations at 1920x1080, some of which may be able to render at 24fps, but some of it will be stuck at 25fps, not much I can do;

* 15 minutes of interview footage to be filmed, so the format isn’t set yet, but it will be shot on either a Z1 or EX1.

I’m not too bothered about the resolution of the interview footage, as it’s meant to be a visual contrast to the live action, but would you recommend shooting it at 24fps or 25fps? Can the Z1 and EX1 both handle 24fps?

I may also be editing the interview footage myself – nothing fancy, just cutting together sequences from a number of shots, and overlaying an additional audio track. I have access to a PC running Vista with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHZ and 4GB RAM – is this fast enough to edit Z1//EX1 footage, and is there any freeware that can help me do this?

Regards,

Tony

Not too sure about the Z1 or the EX1 being capable of shooting both formats but if it is at all possible I would try and keep the footage the same.

Mixing footage of different frame rates can cause problems, dependant on the content, anything with fast movement can look awfull.

So I presume your action shots are 24p/fps and your talking head would be 25p/fps if there is no alternative, I would render the material as 24p/fps as any lack of smoothness would be less noticeable with talking heads.

There are free trial video editors, some are fully useable for 30days if your only doing a one off.

Actually, scratch that - I've just found out that the footage is 25p, not 24p, it's just that the RedCine software always defaults to 24 on opening!

The link was really helpful for other stuff though, thank you.
