And beware of being sucked into the MAC vs PC debate
You have not said what you are editing from, what your intended output is, and what Hardware you have
But Have a read of Andrews linked threads for a bit more

The sofware vary widely in Ease of use and Hardware requirements
Also they vary in cost and complexity
There are however the sub £100 titles, and then thier big brothers which cost anythn from £300 to much more
There are also recently superceeded titles which offer decent VFM if they are all you need
