what software would you suggest? Help please!

Hi all,
I have an old Canon hi 8 recorder and I want to copy the tapes to dvd,it has the red white and yellow plugs in the unit.
I had some software many moons ago which sort of worked if you played the disc on a pc but not on a dvd player?
Also it saved the movie as MPGAV (dat file)?

Is there anything better to buy thats pretty easy to use that will save my tapes to a more readable file?

Thanks in advance
Steve

If you have or can borrow a dvd recorder espesialy with a HD that would be easier for you as you could edit out unwanted bits before coying to dvd.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...GB332&aq=f&oq=
more bits on google about options

Im not sure google saerch has any more idea than you could get on here but I totally agree that the suggestion of a DVD recorder is very sound and dead easy
