After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

After Effects 6.0 worked fine until I installed QuickTime 7, now it doesn't render audio (After Effects error: opening sound component (-2166) )
The QT7/After Effects incompatibility is now well documented on the Web. The solution most often recommended is to uninstall QT7, & reinstall an earlier version.

My problem is: using earlier versions of QT, HiDef clips are not importable into After Effects. So : Using QT7 gives me audio problems, using QT 6 gives me HDef Video problems.
The only suggestions I have had so far involve upgrades and money.

I bought After Effects 6.0 a few years ago & it wasn't cheap. How come the future of an expensive program like this depends on the future development of another program (Quicktime) produced by another company?

Am I just waiting for the next version of Quicktime?

Re: After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

Quicktime 7.6.4 (an update) has just been released for OS X. You don't say what platform you're on, but have you tried updating to 7.6.4 to see if this issue has been addressed?

Quicktime 7 has been around for some time now, though your post reads as if you've only recently upgraded from QT6.

Re: After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

I'm currently using QT 7.6.4 on Vista SP2, and it gives me the audio problem with After Effects. I only re-installed After Effects 6 on my Vista system last week, to do some titles, & found out about the audio problem. I tried various versions of QT 6 but cannot import Hi Def clips (H.264) with older versions.
I could use other video editing programs, but I've always liked After Effects

Does AE6 support AVCHD anyway?

Re: After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

After Effects 6 imports and renders 1280x720 MP4 clips from my Flip Mino HD camera - but without sound.
Any attempt to look at or play the waveform gets the message:
"After Effects Error: opening sound component (-2166)"

I've just put After Effects 6.0 on my laptop running XP, & I get the same problem.

In case I'm confusing people with my After Effects history:
I used After Effects 6 frequently some years ago to edit/title standard definition camcorder clips.
One operating system and two service packs later, I bought this nifty Flip Video HD and thought Aha! I'll dust off After Effects & reinstall.

I don't understand the relationship between After Effects and Quicktime, but you can certainly handle 1280x720 video in AE6 via QT 7 - but not sound!
With QT 6, you can't handle HD - but you can process audio!

Re: After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

Im not sure too but I dont think AE6 has native Hi def file support and the Logic here seems to be that QT7 has the video support ( which AE is piggy backing on) but does not support the audio file the Flip Mino uses
It is a codec issue for QT but AE on its own will not process Hi def MP 4

Re: After Effects 6 / Quick Time 7 audio problem

I'm sure you are right Senu, though I don't understand why the simple provision of a codec doesn't do it, why we need the full QT.
BTW, it isn't just the FlipVideo audio that doesn't work, it is pretty well any audio - even trying to import a wav file sometimes produces strange results.

On the bright side - I've just installed Sony Vegas & this seems to offer a lot of the titling & animation functions that After Effects provides.

Thanks to everyone
