DV "native" format - offload to?

What is the "native" format of Sony's Digital-8? It seems to be close to if not the same as DV - when I offload from the camcorder onto a PC, what format should be used for the PC storage to minimize conversion? I'd like to edit in the highest resolution possible before converting to MPEG2 for burning to DVD ... different capture programs offer different choices, like AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, QT, etc

AVI is the native format of footage from your camcorder, which as you say is the same as from a DV camcorder.
AVI is the best quality format as it is uncompressed. All editing packages will work fine with AVI files, but many can't use or will have problems with compressed MPEG etc files or due to the compression will not be frame accurate.
