Hi I have a Sony Hi8 Camcorder

When I look through the view finder everything is scrambled, both in replay mode and when filming, you can make out the words standby and Rec zig zagging across the eyepiece, it still records and plays and all other functions work, so I took the lithium battery out of the camcorder and now the zig zagging in the eyepiece has disapeared plugged it into to the tele and we can watch no problem and record, could it be that a flat lithuim battery which I believe looks after only the time and date has caused this problem?? I'm hoping I have solved my problem and wont have to send it away for a minimum of 5 weeks and £80+
