help with dvd

This is an absolute beginner question so please be patient.

I have been given a DVD of video footage taken at my son's wedding (DVD-R). I can play it easily on my DVD player attached to my TV.

How do I get it onto my computer so I can do some very simple editing (cutting out those shots of the carpet etc) in Windows Movie Maker.

The files on the DVD are all in a VIDEO_TS folder and consist of VOB BUP and IFO files. I have never worked with video before and this seems much more complicated than the simple photoshop digital stills manipulation I have been used to. Are there any tutorials around?

thanks

tom

You have to capture or copy the dvd to your hard drive and you will need software that will allow you to edit it, if you have a good study through some of these links it may help.
how do i copy and edit a home made dvd-r dvd - Google Search

Re: help with dvd

Hi no you cant use wmm as it does not accept the format what you need is an Mpeg editor and this one is freee
Free Video Dub: video editing like Virtual Dub (VirtualDub)
To get the dvd on you r pc have you got nero or any thing like that you want to rip the dvd as a Folder (video ts )
If you dont have software then something like dvd shrink also free is ok you just choose open disc then backup and from the selection choose hard disc folder you can even do basic cutting in shrink .try that for now come back with any queries
Download DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 - FileHippo.com

Re: help with dvd

You can however copy the vob files directly to your HDD from the DVD

These are mpeg2 files which most modern video editing software can edit
WMM does not accept mpeg2 files for input and as its output format are also limited it is time to use sometng else either free or paid for
Mpeg2 editors are fine but Even mainstream editng sofware will generally edit mpeg2 with minimal reencoding and loss of quality
Mpeg2 can degrade a bit ( depending on software) if it has been reencoded several times ( a bit like resaving a jpeg more than a few times)

Using software to extract the vob files is equally OK. The caveat is that vob file sizes are limited to 1GB and breaks do not corresponde to any particular scenes as such but editing off a DVD is not complicated..
The first step is to ditch WMM
Free software often seems to have a bit more of a learning curve . I would suggest you try them but be aware that paid for capable software isnt that costly

Re: help with dvd

Not to sure about using the term Capture as in post #2 ,normally associated with linking a player and a recorder together or similar .All that is simply needed is a ripper , many free programs to do this job , this simply rip's the vob files to another format so you can edit them in a video edit package .Number1 , ShrinkDVD ,DVDFab ,just 3 of the many rippers about .Ripping your own DVD's is perfectly above board , it's only when folk start ripping bought DVD's does the piracy matter come into things.
As post #4 has pointed out , you can just copy the vob files to a folder on your hard drive but not all editing packages allow you to work with vob files .Womble and VideoReDo [ this is the one I use ] allow you to open and clip parts from vob files and save them as .avi or mpegs .
So , you could open each vob file ,one at a time ,clip ,edit the parts you want to keep and save them , then join all the bits together in your editing package and put onto DVD.
Another way to do it if you have access to a DVD/HDD recorder is to copy the DVD from disk to Hard Drive , then use the editing facilty to take out the bit you dont want . You would be left with a series of clips you could then join together and copy back to DVD . Of course , using this method means you can run as many copys as you like for friends and family without the need for a PC or editing package . I use a LiteOn DVD/HDD recorder and it makes quite a good job of things .

I have indeed , I have such devices myself , but the OP did state he has a DVD . The easiest and quickest way would be to rip the disk , no messing around ,no additional hardware , just 1 piece of software would do the job .
