MiniDV problem - what to do next?

We have a Canon DM-MV5i MiniDV recorder, which has performed faultlessly when we have (only very occasionally) used it. We took it with us to Egypt for a holiday of a lifetime, but were upset to find that it kept on saying 'remove cassette'. Assumed it was something to do with 50+ deg temperatures, so only filmed when cooler.

Arrived home and tried to playback what little of the holiday we recorded, only to see a very broken up picture. Tried one of our perfect tapes recorded a while ago - again unviewable images - with no improvement after head cleaning!!

Firstly, is our dv repairable, if so, where to go for reasonable costs?

Secondly, I suspect that it could be beyond economic repair. If so, what to do about our cassettes, as not all have been backed up. Can I play them back on another MiniDV player, or do I have to get another Canon DM-MV5i for replay?

Thirdly, if I can use another MiniDv player, anybody got one to borrow, hire, buy or whatever?

Any help, suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: MiniDV problem - what to do next?

I had something similar happen to my Panasonic miniDV camcorder. In the end I just bought another Panny camcorder off a forum user and used that to backup all my footage to HDD and DVD.
