Help with Panasonic NV-DS65

Hi,
I am trying to connect my Camcorder to my PC using USB. I have followed the instructions- install the supplied drivers before connecting the switched on Cam. Whenever I now try to connect the cam, my PC just hangs. I have been able to Ctrl Alt Del, which then tells me that cmdinst is not responding, then hangs completely.
I am using Win ME with a 1Gig Athlon and generally low specs by today's standards. My main concern at the moment is to download the pictures from the SD card. This has worked on another PC. Before I write to Panasonic/Microsoft about this, I just wondered if the real experts could help with a workaround, or if anyone has had a similar problem???
