Canon XH-A1s or similar?

Hey chaps, I've been looking at the Canon xH-a1/a1s for a long time and they're not getting any cheaper, in fact the xh-a1 has progressively gotten more expensive so I'm wondering, what would you guys say the alternatives to this camcorder are? - I'm talking in terms of performance, features, size, price?

Another reason I'm thinking about an alternative is that I'm finding my options in terms of getting hold of a trusted dealer somewhat limited. I have found maybe three sites that actually have the Xh-a1 in stock and don't look like they're going to rip me off. I'm in the UK by the way.

It is probably in a class by itself, unless you want to look at the Panasonics. They however are moving the AVCCAM way using non tape . and a " Semi pro " version of AVCHD
The Sony equivalents are quite good too but their use of CMOS makes some folk wary of them
