£450 max for a HD Camcorder what would you go for ?

Hello all.

I was wondering if you could please help me. I have got about £450 to spend on a camcorder and was just wondering what camcorder is the best out there for my budget.

I personally would like a full HD camcorder, Main uses will be for holidays and my son growing up.

I did have a sony mini dv camcorder and broke it a while back, so I have been saving some money up to purchase another one.

Well I hope this has made sense and I really appreciate your help.

David

Add a little extra and take a look at Canon's HG20 or HF200. The HG20 is a little sharper, especially indoors.

Could probably get an open box HF10 return from the Canon eBay shop for about £450-500.

If you absolutely must stick for £450, the Sony HDR-CX105E is a good bet, at least according to this review: Sony Handycam HDR-CX105E Review - Camcorder Reviews - TrustedReviews

I looked at this camera and though it looked quite good.. That was until I read you cant use SDHC, but have to use Sonys own memory cards (at double the price).. Why do they do that? Sorry, I would never buy a product that doesnt use a standard memory card.. Surely they most loose alot of customers this way?

Sony have always done that .. and got away with it. they probably hoped Memory stick would become a standard but they are not known for sharing technology generously
n fact the main reason BD is now te hi def playback format ( apart from Toshibas carelessness with HD DVD is that Sony for once joined a consortium and did not do the usual closed shop with BD

TBH SDHC was not a standard till lately . there are still CF cards, XD cards and MMC

Amazingly not
Saying that, their DSLRs do use CF cards as well... restricting that market to memory card only would have been a serious marketing misjudgment in a market where lot folk did not initially trust them to last the distance
