Archiving AVCHD

Could anyone let me know the best way of archiving AVCHD and AVCHD Lite clips in their original format?

I am currently importing them into iMovie 09, but an answer to my thread in the Mac forum confirmed that this converts the AVCHD to AIC files. I would like to retain the originals as well.

Is it as simple as saving the 'AVCHD' folder down to HDD, or will this not contain everything?

I'm using a1TB HDD formatted to fat32 and just copying the folder which contains the AVCHD files using my PC over to the HDD.Then renaming the folder to whatever you like so as to recognise it.
I can view my footage by plugging the HDD to my PS3 then accessing the files & volia. The only drawback is there is a small pause between files when viewing.
Seems to work ok sofar hope this helps!

Re: Archiving AVCHD

If you want to archive them in a form which will be readily recognised by iMovie, use Disk Utility to make a disk image of the contents of the memory card. Archive the image, and when you mount it, iMovie will treat it as if you've attached the camera or the memory card via a USB card reader, and allow you to import accordingly.

You may decide otherwise, but I find it's best to delete the AIC files once I've completed a given edit - they're just way to hefty. And archiving the raw AVCHD files is easy enough, and obviously takes up much, much less hard drive real estate.

I also make DVD copies (easy enough if you're only using 4GB cards, otherwise you're faced with splitting the contents over a number of DVDs) and store them off-site as a disaster copy.

Re: Archiving AVCHD

Roxio Toast 10 has an AVCHD Archive feature. I have not used it yet, but will do soon. I am hoping it will turn the DVD into an image as Andrew has already said!

Re: Archiving AVCHD

I am saving all files and folders in BDMV folder. I burn them on to Blu ray and they play ok on my Panasonic BD35 and will allow you to rewind and pressing next chapter button will take you to next file.
I am keeping copy on HDD but will probably delete it when I have 2 Blu ray copies (Just in case).
That works really great for me as it serves two purposes I have backup in native format I can play with later and I also have copy I can Play on my Blu ray player.
Getting enaugh footage to fill BD25 using only 16GB flash is a bit tricky but it can be done.

Hope it helps.

Good strategy , however I would not be in haste to wipe of HDD copies as HDD space is cheap, and they form one more type of archive
The likes of WDTV media player can play your media files off the HDD (or indeed any usb device) to HDTV if your BD player cant or wont travel
