Sony CCD-V100E - cannot open cassette compartment

Hi- I have had this camera since 1985! I believe it was one of the first video 8 cameras. Just recently I discovered that I may be able to transfer all my precious old movies onto dvd via my computer for editing by using an analogue/dv converter. I was so excited but sadly the cassette compartment of my old camera won't open. "caution" appears in the viewfinder and the flashing symbol for condensed moisture appears on the playback display. I wondered if anyone knows whether this can be fixed. Thank you.

Just a guess, perhaps your camrea has a condensation sensor in it.

In storage it may have become damp.

Is it possible to put it in with a dehumidifier for a day or so?

Thanks for replying. You are absolutely right..the camera does have a condensation sensor. I left it in a warm area near our hot water tank overnight! but unfortunately it didn't help. The dehumidifier is an idea worth trying though.

If I am unable to get it going I have been investigating Digital8 cameras which are backwards compatible with video8 tapes. I believe these "newer" cameras have firewire connections so I wouldn't need a converter to transfer the video tape to my computer. Do you know if this is an alternative option?
