Edit HD Camcorder Video

Looking to buy a HD camcorder. When I download the video can I edit it using a software package and then save it back again to say a SD card to view on a HD TV maintaining the same HD quality?

Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

Well you can transfer it to mac/pc - edit it and save it out as HD - Yes. But does your TV allow HD play back from the SD slot? I thought most had basic mpeg play back?

You will need something like a WDTV media player which can play HD to your TV!

Hope that helps

It depends on the camcorder, though having said that, I can't think of a single one that lets you do this. Typically you're limited to viewing unedited clips directly from the memory card.

Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

It appears that I can save the edited video back to a SD card in HD format. Presumably if I put the card in the camcorder and attach to the TV via HDMI lead then I will be able to view the edited version?

Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

Aha, i see, sorry i misread, thought your TV could play Video clips.

I am not sure then, i know from my recent experience that my Panasonic records in AVCHD format, which when i import into iMovie it's converted to AIC and i have so save the edited project as .mov,.avi.mpeg etc.

Most unlikely
The camcorders seem to be unable to recognice fils other than those created by themselves
Also they organise these into a structure which you are unlikely to duplicate when copying them back to the card

PS:I hadnt seen this

However some BD players like the Panasonic BD 35 ( I have one) will alow you play the files of an SDHC card to TV
This is also the case with the PS3
And as mentioned above the WDTV media player device can read off most USB devices (including HDD) to TV

Angry Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

Sorry to step in like this, but can't find where to ask this question:
I have a Sony HDR-SR7 Handycam. When I download onto my PC, it stores in moff file. I have tried everything I can think of, which isn't much (duuuhhh!) to open these files, but with no success.
Can anyone tell me how to convert to something I can open? I have tried to search for the answers, but to no avail.
Thanks

Can't help with an answer, but may I suggest starting a new thread for queries only tangentially related to existing threads?

I have a mini DV (HDV) camcorder and I have just started editing HD video. After editing I burn AVCHD video on a normal DVD in HD quality. Th is then plays on a Blu-Ray player. There is a very small loss in quality from the original. In best quality a DVD holds about 30mins. of video. Video transferred from an original SHDC card transfers about 20 mins of video (AVCHD).
You may wish to consider this option and include a BD player in your budget, if you don't already have one. Using this method of storage you don't end up having to buy lots of expensive SDHC cards.

You should have software with the handycam that reads the files. But otherwise, try the free trial of Sony Vegas movie studio. I think .moff is not important. Mt2s files are the important video files.

Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

You can also play back AVCDH (.mts, mt2s) files through an Xbox 360, if you're running Windows 7 on your 'puter.

Re: Edit HD Camcorder Video

The WD TV player, mentioned earlier by deefadog, is one of the most cost effective ways of playing back HD footage, IMHO.
It will play back most formats - including the original .mts or .m2ts files .
You can even fit your SD cards straight from the camera, into a USB card reader, and play those directly.

It plugs into an HDTV using an HDMI connector for HD playback, or standard RCA phonos for SD playback into any TV.

You can simply store your video on an external hard drive, or USB stick, in whichever format you choose - AVCHD, HDV, Xvid,MP4......and so on -- plug the USB from the harddrive into the player, the player into the TV and away you go.

No discs, no having to 'burn' any discs to the correct format for a Blu ray player, just plug in and go.

And it's about £70!

Apart from the price, I find the main advantage is the versatility of the number of formats it can cope with.
I convert my AVCHD to Canopus HQ to make it easier to edit, withoput losing any noticeable quality, and then export the edited files in the freebie XVID format, which again shows very little quality loss.
The WD player plays them fine, with no jerkiness or motion blur - brilliant!

And no, I don't have any connection to WD!!

Thank you Mandark. What does tangentially mean?

Tangentially related = comment at a tangent to the thread = slightly relevant.
