Converting AVCHD

I'm on the look out for a HD camcorder.

I have a standard C2D laptop with 3 gig memory and on board graphics. Now I realise from previous threads this is under powered to edit AVCHD files but would these specs be reasonable to convert AVCHD files to standard DVD?

My plan would be to save the AVCHD files with a view to buying a decent pc within a year or two (i have a ps3) but for family and friends i would convert the files to standard dvd.

So my questions are:
1) What processing power is required to convert avchd files to standard dvd?
2) Which software would people recommend? I'm looking to but a Panasonic camcorder. Does the bundled software convert to dvd?

Many thanks

Re: Converting AVCHD

Yes, the supplied Panasonic software, HD Writer, allows conversion to SD, and allows you to write the converted files to a DVD-R or DVD -RW.

As regards computing power required, well it used to take a while on my old P4 2.4GHz - about 3 times real time - so your current PC should beat that easily!
