Building a HD video editing PC, do i need a top end graphics card?

Hi guys,

Am building a PC for the old man for doing HD video editing and i'm not sure whether he'd need a high end graphics card for this? Does anybody have any thoughts/recommendations?

Which kind of HD? HDV has modest requirements . AVCHD not so modest: Decent Quad core , I7 systems ( or higher end AMD) always do better
My personal experience is that it may be cheaper to actually buy a preconfigured system unless you have access to components at very modest prices. I used to system build but lately find it hard to beat many of the prebuilt systems though I then upgrade with a few components

While you dont need a "gamers card" : a midrange card ( rather than bog standard budget) always helps if it can off-load work from the CPU and make the overall system performance better

Hi there

I would agree with senu, a Core i7 processor like the 720 plus 4Gb RAM at least is what you need...

suspect we may be straying a little off the topic of this forum, but in short the i7 920 is probably the best right now in terms of bang-for-buck - the i7-920 costs just over £200 although the mo-bo's are still a bit pricey at around £150 for a good one.

This page will give you a good idea of the difference in performance between an i7-920 and a QX9770 on a 775 board...

Benchmark Results: A/V Encoding - Review Tom's Hardware : Intel Core i7-975 Extreme And i7-950 Reviewed

although you then have to buy your mem in triple-stick format which means more outlay, although 3 x 2Gb should only cost you around £60 and be pretty futureproof for a good while, even with Windows 7....
