Connecting HD camera to standard TV

I want to buy a pocket hd cam like kodak zx1 or sony webbie but i have a standard tv.I want to know will my tv play hd videos? and how will it look like?
I know that these cameras record in 640x480 too which is 4:3, but i want to know if my tv can show 1280x720 which is 16:9 with 2 modes 30fps and 60fps.

Re: Connecting HD camera to standard TV

Unless your TV is "HD Ready" (God how I hate that phrase) or an HDTV, it won't play high definition video. If the camera you buy has an analogue output (otherwise known as composite video), then you can connect it to your standard definition TV using the normal red-yellow-white RCA cables of the kind used to connect a DVD player to a TV. But this method gives you standard definition video, not high definition video (bottom line is, it won't look as good as HD). Also, if you're in the UK, then your standard definition TV won't play 30fps video - not in colour, anyway.

you mean the picture will be in 16:9 with black spaces up and down and the picture quality will be in standard definition like ordinary tv broadcasting?
I live in a country which uses PAL system in tv broadcasting

Only if the camcorder you buy has the analogue output option, and your TV is 16:9 switchable. If your TV doesn't have a widescreen mode, then the picture will probably end up cropped (i.e. sides lopped off).

PAL rules!

Probably not. PAL TVs expect a 25fps signal. If it does play, you probably won't get a colour picture.

Re: Connecting HD camera to standard TV

I have the Sanyo HD2000 which is full HD that records at both 30fps and 60fps and I have no issues playing back all the videos at my normal PAL crt TV (non-HDTV) using the RCA video (yellow) cable, obviously not at HD quality and letter-boxed. In the HD2000, you can select the TV output system as either NTSC or PAL and the type as 4:3 or 16:9 so you can playback using any TV with the correct selection. I am not sure if the Kodak or Sony camcorder you are considering has similar options. My Blog has more details on this but it may or may not be applicable for other camcorders.

Re: Connecting HD camera to standard TV

My old crt TV would play NTSC at 60FPS and it was a PAL set. It was the top of range when it was bought though(cost me £1299). I had to give it away when I bought my new HD Ready tv. All I can sugest is try it and see.
