Canon DC301 (DVD) to Premiere Pro to Edited DVD

Hi,

I have a Canon DC301 camcorder which records directly onto mini DVD discs. Unlike my previous camcorders (which all had firewire), this one doesn't. I therefore need to take my DVD discs and somehow import into Premiere Pro so I can do my usual video editing.

I have tried various ways of doing this and can't get decent output results back out of PP onto DVD. I am using PP 1.5 (old I know) and it won't import DVD directly. So I have tried using VirtualDub to convert the VOB's to AVI's (uncompressed). I have also tried various other converting software to take the DVD and convert to AVI, MPEG2, MPEG4 etc etc.

No matter what I do, I can't get decent quality footage back out of PP. I either get jerky footage or the tell tale jagged lines of problems with interlacing.

I guess I need to fully understand the correct path I should take to get my camcorder DVD's onto my PC in the right format for use inside Premier Pro. Is my source camcorder DVD footage interlaced or progressive? So many questions.

Any advice is much appreciated as this is driving me crazy

Cheers.
