Transferring Hi8 to a pc ?

Hi ,

Please excuse my lack of any knowledge on this subject , but i was thinking i would please the wife and get all my old hi8 tapes edited on my pc BUT ....

i have not got a clue how to do this , or if it is at all possible ?

How would i transfer my recordings to a pc ?

I still have the sony camcorder with connections , but they are just like phono wires .

Do i need a special lead ?

If it is possible to get them on a pc , what program could i use to edit the movies and cut bits i dont want in there ?

You need a capture card or you can use your video card if it has the correct inputs + s-video/composite lead.

If going the capture card route, you'll likely get some capture software to go with it. Although there's plenty of freeware alternatives out there.

Re: Transferring Hi8 to a pc ?

I picked up one of these cheap devices from Ebay...

EasyCAP USB Video Capture

Had to use the enclosed Ulead Movie Studio 8 software to capture (from some old VHS home movies), but then imported the captured video into Premiere Elements 7 for editing.

Worked fine and relatively cheap.

There's also Roxio Video Capture USB which includes the editing/DVD authoring software.
USB captures should work with either laptops or desktops of sufficient power.

Another route is to record to a domestic DVD-recorder on DVDRW, and rip these to the PC for editing.
