Help required with choosing new camcorder

Hi,

My 8mm camcorder has seen better days... and we want to capture the new arrival who is now 16 weeks!

Not much in the way of magazines with reviews, loads for digi cams.

I have looking for a new digital one. Quite fancied the Sony HDR-XR105 but I dont need HD. One of the reasons is transferring to dvd I hear you need blue ray recorder.

So, I reckon Standard Definition will be suffice? Can anyone recommend a good quality model? I tend to go for Sony branded products.

Tks,

Re: Help required with choosing new camcorder

How much are you looking to spend? That will help guide recommendations.

Also, it's usually a fairly simple matter to make standard definition DVDs from high definition video - most editing software will allow you to make standard definition versions of your movies. The real question is, can you live with standard definition video as high definition becomes increasingly pervasive, if not ubiquituous?

One more thing: are you intending to edit your videos on your PC?

Re: Help required with choosing new camcorder

I would pay the £550 for the Sony HD. Just not sure I really need it. Always like to buy the best though.

SD models I have looked at are in the circa of around £300. Are the getting going the direction of Betamax?

Is there much difference between HD and SD quality wise?

Wasnt planning to edit on pc. What sort of costs for the software are we looking at?

Tks,
