The conversion ( or renaming) is to *.mpg .
not wmv , converting anything to wmv needs you to have the ( free) WMV 9 encoder on your system. At any rate wmv is yet another compressed format
MOD are mpeg2 files
Im sure there are free software
The problem with them ( as you know from ffmpeg) is that the feature set tends to be limited and GUI simplicity may not necessarily be the top priority
Saying that most editing software available now will convert and edit
