Faulty Sony HDR-SR12E

My Sony HDR-SR12E i bought from these very forums has just developed a fault at around 14 months old .

It will not switch on if it's on battery power but if you plug it in to the electricity it works perfectly. It also says it's charging the battery for about 30-60 seconds and then the charge light goes out. I've tried using 3 batteries (all official Sony ones) which i know have a charge in them but no luck .

So i filled in the Sony online repair form and got a nasty suprise at the end where they told me it would be £176 for the repair!!

I've googled around and found a few independant repair companies and wondered if anyone could recomened for or against any of these? One in particular i was looking at was camcorderrepair.co.uk who seemed to offer a good service.

Re: Faulty Sony HDR-SR12E

Yes my loyalty to sony has gone in the past few months, my hc1 only gave 2 years before it neaded attention[sold now as tape mechanism went], a previous 2100 had to go for repair after 14 months, my first fx7 had to be exchanged,my sony top of the range hdd dvd recorder now has a dirty drive probobly not worth repairing.Touch wood my sr12 almost 12 months old has been reliable but i dont use it now as i prefer hdv canon hv30 for editing. There does seem to be a deffinate fault with your sr12 best of luck and keep us imformed. If you do have to have a repair i would advise sony as independants dont always give good servise as i have found to my cost.

PS forgot to say my fz vaio laptop is tempermental ----

Re: Faulty Sony HDR-SR12E

Might be worth checking out the Sale of Goods Act Fact Sheet - BERR
on this one.

The traditional concept of only 12 months warranty is not always true in law. A product of this value is not likely to be considered to only have a 14 month 'fit for purpose' life span before failure, in the eyes of the court.

Contact the seller and tell them the goods are 'unfit for purpose', and that you intend to sue, if they won't pay for repair or replacement.
