Hi everyone. I'm a fisheries biologist and I've been doing a lot of searching for a good underwater HD setup.
I originally bought an Olympus 1030SW but quickly found out the camera couldn't even record at 30 fps (xD cards are junk) and the video quality was very poor. Exposure/focus is locked to whatever you initially focus on. Not the best for fish that move.
A lot of the species I film are young and very timid and don't appreciate a person in a drysuit in the water trying to film them. I stuck my 1030SW on the end of a pole and the results were far better - but I couldn't see what the heck I was filming.
I figure an underwater camera with an external monitor/recorder is the best setup. I found this
HD Pole Camera.
I also took at the
Sanyo VPC-WH1 thinking that I could rotate the screen so it faced upwards. I still think I'd have a hard time seeing it through the water and it doesn't solve the problem of having to view fish from a distance.
Does anyone have experience with pole camera setups? Is there a camcorder out there that could accept input from the HD pole cam above? It would be great to have a dry camcorder and an underwater camera as well.
I know it's a bit beyond the realm of consumer video, but I thought I'd ask.
