Anyway to prevent being host?

Is there anyway to prevent me being a host on Modern Warfare 2?

I have a 10mb Virgin Media broadband download but upload is only 512k so it doesn't work when I'm host. I always seem to get picked though.

I've tried using wireless and ethernet and both are exactly the same

I would have thought half-meg upload wasn't too bad? Mine is currently at about 300 on a 8mb connection?

Also, how do you know you are the host?

512k upload should be fine. If you look at the amount of data used for gaming, it's actually pretty small.

Yeah mine isn't much better:

... and when I've been host it's been silky smooth. Have you tried ringing up your ISP and complain that you think the connection is a bit up and down?

Borrow my interweb connection, I doubt I ever end up hosting.

That said it all seems quite lag-free the last few nights, have they fixed the matchmaking/host selection?

I've found problems before when my connection looks ok on a speedtest, but it is dropping packets, which makes it laggy. Normally a router restart sorts that.

I found a way on my router of slowing down the sync speed. This sounds like it would mean a worse connection, but it seems that a lower sync speed gives a more stable connection. This is much more important for online gaming than bandwidth, as Sniper Ash stats show.

I didnt mean to hi-jack the thread with speed tests, they should be left to What is your average connection speed?

I was merely making a point that it works in very weird ways as can be seen by my connection and the fact i get given host

Ballgirl - I just noticed this website linked from speedtest.net: Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test

That will tell you the quality of the line, not just the bandwidth. Probably more relevant for online gaming.

I go through patches of being picked as host. I don't know why, when I am most of the other players only have 3/5 connection quality, and as I've mentioned a few times previously this is quite an advantage to me in one on ones.

I'd like to know if it's possible not be host, too. I know someone has said that the amount of data sent is pretty minimal but I'd like to know how minimal? I have a suspicion that if I'm hosting for more than an hour or so I hit Virgin Broadband's upload limit - which is 1400mb - and I get throttled.

Does anyone know if this is theoretically possible or if I'm barking up the wrong tree and hosting for even a long period won't get near that amount of data?

Those speeds dont look right at all. Especially for a Be connection.

What package are you on?

1% packet loss but I don't think thats too bad on a wireless internet connection. My xbox is connected to the router with an ethernet cable so should be no loss.

My router is wgt624v4. I've tried opening all the necessary ports and nothing helps. I've also tried the wgr614v9 that Virgin have given me and its the same

I've had this a few times this week, i'm also on Virgin 10mb!

Playing the other night, i have full 4 green bars, everyone else had 1! the game lasts about 1 minute evryone moans its lagging like a ****. It does the changing host thing, i end in the lobby on my own and have left my party where my mates are playing the same game i've just been kicked from!!

To add to this my router decides its gonna play up today and keeps disconnecting me from xbox live. Has to be restarted a couple of times to get going.

Just ordered some homeplugs tonight so will sort out the router issue I have.

Let me know if the homeplugs help. Saying that I've tried my xbox direct to the virgin modem and it still did the same

I'm also having the same problem as others in this thread.. I get picked to be the host and the game lags for everyone apart from me

Is it only people on Virgin Media that are experiencing this?

I just unplugged the ethernet from my xbox and connected it to my laptop to test the connection and it seems to be running fine..

I've read on cableforum.co.uk that changing dns servers might help. Changed the ones on my router to be Open DNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 so will give that a try tomorrow

You should want to be host, then you'll have the "host advantage" that this game favours.

To be fair I had never been host until last night, and lo and behold I come first for only the third time ever! And then Second Second. I usually come second from bottom or bottom in every game, so I definatley agree that there is a host adevantage!

I was in a lobby last night were I was host for the majority of it. I was raking in the kills for most games (still couldn't beat my 9 killstreak though ). Connection quality dominates this game I've found.

This is getting on my nerves now, there's nothing wrong with my connection from what I can see but I can't host matches at all Basically when the game starts and I'm the host, everyone is on a 1 bar connection, apart from me and then 10 seconds later I get kicked back into the lobby.

What makes it worse is that nearly everytime I'm in the pre-match lobby and the host leaves, I will be picked as the host for the next game.. So I have to leave the match if it starts looking for a new host
