Finding Games with 50ms Ping

I just noticed at the top when finding games its now looking for games with a 50ms ping instead of the 100ms it used to be. Anyone else getting this?

Yep, I noticed it too early this morning. I don't recall any patch either.

However it didn't stop me getting 2-3 bar connection on those games.

I presume there are enough people playing now to be able to reduce the maximum ping time.

Thats cool hopefully should be a bit better for the connection.

Its a bit of a double edged sword this matchmaking. Its good as you don't get the annoying americans but you also miss out on the nice americans and just left annoying Brit kids.

I tried earlier and got the 50ms ping... still did rather bad... really rather odd as for the 1st few days I was often in the top 3 in FFA games... seems now I'm rarely placed anywhere other than last... or 2nd to last!

Think I'll retire MW2 as it's just not as much fun for me as MW1.

Ohhh I hope this helps with the lag, it's been unbearable the last few evenings.

I am finding lag a real factor. There are many times I got shots away but on the other person's kill cam I am standing there like a lemon while he knifes me.

On the other hand, this afternoon I got a really long run where I was the host. It was so obvious I almost didn't need to bother confirming it by looking at the green bars. I won every 50/50 and came top of 5 or 6 games in a row.

I was unfortunately a victim of my own success tho. All of a sudden my connection has gone completely to pieces - I strongly suspect that all this hosting has triggered my virgin broadband download OR upload limit and I'm being severely throttled. This effectively ends my gaming for the evening. All the matches I've joined since it happened have been awful.

On WAW lag was a serious problem for me.

However, it has been spot on for me bar one or two games on MW2. Not a clue why this is, think the matchmaking is making a massive difference. Actually winning a lot of free for all games which never happened on WAW

How do you know if your the host or not?

I've seen the option to 'kick' a player from the lobby, but it's always greyed out....so I'm assuming I'm not the host??

I was never sure either at first, but when you are the only one with all five green bars (when you press select to look at the scores) it is clear.

And also pretty obvious to tell without checking as I barely lost a firefight in 6 games!

Does anyone know if it's plausible that I've been throttled by Virgin for breaching either the download or upload(more likely?) limit? I'm on the 20mb package but the upstream limit isn't very generous I think.

The kick option is to kick players of your party

You know you are host as you are first in the game (look at the leaderboard and you will see the first onto a team) and the leaderboard will show you a solid green connection when people are joining at the beginning of a match etc

I normally dont have too much of a problem with lag on games

I've been on virgin/ntl for years now and have never really noticed the throttling. And I download quite alot!
Gaming online doesn't use that much data, so can't see it affecting your gaming that much....could be wrong though!

Unfortunatly I'm having to use wireless at the moment. Its generally really good, never really lag at all. Had a bad game the other night lagging like a biatch! Next game was fine though.

Was thinking of trying homeplugs? Are they any good?

yeah like I said I don't reckon I've hit a download limit, more an upload one with being the host of the game for over an hour (at least).

Well it's either throttling, or my other suspicion is just my local area is over-subscribed and in the evenings there is too much contention which is why I get such a big drop off in connection quality. It's ok during the day.

I signed up to Virgin 20Mbps about 3 months ago. All was fine at first, but over the last 4-6 weeks my connection was degrading to the point where it settled about 3Mbps and lag became more common than I'd like.

Not good enough, so I called them Monday, got a diagnosis over the phone, engineer sent out Weds AM and now I'm back to 20Mbps and decent connections.

What was their reason/excuse for it and how did the remedy it?

Knowing VM the first suggestion from them will have been the callers pc being riddled with spyware etc.

This is really good news - nice with the keen eye there.

To be honest I didn't really notice it myself last night, although I was doing a lot better and this may be something to do with it. Coming round corners and winning a 1-1 and the games generally didn't have much lag.

Well i got chucked into a few games last night and it was obvious who was hosting the guy with 20+ kills and no deaths. Every bloody game and everyone else was on 4+ kills and 10+ deaths

Most people had a red bar and this guy had full 5 green bars.
Was even better on killcam, in game i would pretty much just drop down dead and on killcam this guy was next to me but in game i had not even spotted him. It was not his skill getting the kills as the killcam showed him spraying his bullets everywhere

Jumped out of those games and kept searching, finally got into a playable game and then started winning

Spoiler Split Screen on your own yea

I've got into habit of checking the connection quality before each match and who is hosting etc.

Re: Finding Games with 50ms Ping

Had a few bad games this morning. Never really experienced it before.

Am on Sky getting around 17Mb and 70ms ping according to speedtest but ping test puts it somewhere near 30!

homeplugs are fantastic. I cannot recommend them enough. Almost as good as having a wired connection. I use solwise 85m homeplugs which have been fault free for 3 years.

I used to have xbox wireless dongle, but it rubbish in comparison to homeplugs.

think im gonna give them ago then!!

does the wiring in your house effect the quality?? My house is about 30-35 years old and has the original wiring so not sure how this will effect them??

also do they need to be connected direct to the mains? i have my xbox connected to a 6 way, would it be ok on there?

sorry for all the questions, and sorry for going off topic!

The downstream line noise was too strong apparently. It should be between -11 and 11 and mine was around 16 to 17. Engineer just stuck an attenuator on the line, value dropped to 1, bingo.
