I've usually got music playing over the game, and try not to pay attention to all of the children singing and shouting, so can someone tell me whether the callsigns are actually used in-game?

So, for instance, you get a kill and there's a voice-over saying "Disruptor!", or "Daisy pusher", or whatever?

No, there's no voice over.

The emblems and titles are rewarded for doing all of the challenges (for weapons / attachments / perks / killstreaks etc etc etc)

No they aren't.

You could always just mute the kids? Do you not find yourself at a disadvantage not being able to hear people sneaking up behind you or gunfire from close by?

Not really, If I stop and listen close enough I can still hear footsteps, even with music playing and people talking, as I'm using X1's.
