NAT Question!

Any ideas please let me know!

I know if anyone ever has NAT problems on the xbox 360 the best thing to do is just set it to the DMZ server. Problem I have is, I have 2 xbox's wanting to go on Live on the same router. Sometimes it connects fine, sometimes one of us get chucked out randomly.

Are there some ports I can forward on the 2nd xbox to try and improve the connection? Or anything else I can do?

Thanks

Alan

Re: NAT Question!

I've got 2 360's on the same connection too. What I have done is give both 360's a static IP and portforward to one of them (ports found through wese007's link), and put the other one on the DMZ.

A problem I have found with this though is that with some games (MW2 in particular), I cannot find any matches when the other 360 is online due to the NAT being strict. Some games (like Halo 3) work fine and rarely kick us off Live.

Some routers can handle multiple 360's well, others can't. A test you can try to see if your router can handle it is to disable the DMZ and portforwarding, ensure that UPnP is enabled on the router and set the 360's IP settings to automatic. Restart your router then turn on the first 360 and run a Live connection test (ensure that NAT is open). Navigate to the Game Marketplace on that 360 and then turn the other 360 on and run the Live test. If it is Open, should work fine. If Moderate or Strict, you will probably have problems so you might have to use one 360 at a time for some games

Re: NAT Question!

Thanks for the helpful replies guys, I will give those ports a go and if that doesn't work I'll just buy a better router!

Re: NAT Question!

i've had this problem for years my younger brother an I both share same router and we have never been both able to have an OPEN NAT. Mine is always set to Open and brothers always moderate. I remember when I looked into this last time around someone mentioned that only certain routers can share an open nat out to 2 or more Xbox 360s at one time.

Re: NAT Question!

This is the only reason I use BT Homehub as we need both our 360's to have open nat and this is one of the few routers that do it out of the box (no settings or DMZ/Ports etc)

Re: NAT Question!

I use a DLink DSL-2640B which can support multiple 360s with open NAT. It works via UPnP which is enabled by default, so everything works out of the box.

All 360s need to obtain IP addresses automatically as I've found if one has a static ip address the NAT settings on that 360 are Moderate. Other than that though I highly recommend it.

Interesting one last night. Turn Xbox on and NAT is moderate, it's always been open. Reset router and it goes to strict ***!

Re: NAT Question!

This is doing my nut also. I can turn on my xbox and NAT will be open, next time it will be strict, have another go and if im lucky it will be open again. No reason for it what so ever. Its only this game that it affects too.

Ive done all the usual port forwarding etc. Seems theres 100's if not 1000's with the same problems too - very strange indeed!

Re: NAT Question!

my setup with netgear wpn824v2 only allows one to be Open and one to be moderate. This is using static IP addresses with port forwarding. Tried using UPNP and automatic IP address resolution but ended up giving us strict and moderate NATs....

Re: NAT Question!

We have 3x XBOX360's regualrly online at the same time (5mb internet speed) - I tried every possible wat to get all 3 machines with an open NAT, but after reading the link above purchased a DLink DSL-2640B from an auction site, for £9 delivered.

We now have no problems at all - All are open NAT, and setup as DHCP. For me it was a cheap fix, and works out of the "box".

Re: NAT Question!

I have noticed that my NAT has also gone to 'strict', as far as I can remember before I installed MW2, it had been 'moderate'. I wonder has the recent update upset the applecart slightly in relation to NAT?

It was taking me a long time to find games the last 2 nights, unless I joined in a friend's session, which worked OK.

I have been getting a similar problem to yours.

When I first got MW2 it was moderate, then I read that ideally it should be open. So entered the 360's IP into the DMZ. Then checked and it was open.

Turned 360 on next day and its changed to strict. I have noticed that the xbox has changed IP address, so had to change it on the DMZ again. Seems ok now
but was properly doing my head in

Was thinking of getting homeplugs? any have any experience using them with the 360??

My router is a belkin, its pretty crap. always seem to have to reboot it if its been on a while. otherwise neither laptop, ps3 or 360 will find it

I've been having a similar issue. For the last 3 years my NAT has been "open" according to the 360 - up til the last 2 weeks or so, when I noticed it has changed to "moderate". I've put the 360 into the DMZ on my router and it's still "moderate"!

To me this means only one thing - my ISP (Virgin Media) have detected my many games of MW2 as some sort of p2p filesharing and blocked something at their end.

I don't enjoy the prospect of a support call to VM but I can't think of another way around this problem... is anyone else having the same issue?

I have been with virgin for 2 years and have never had a problem until mw2. Nat will be fine one minute, then I will finish a game and it will change to strict.
Strangely I played waw yesterday and nat stayed open all afternoon.
